Back to Basics

When Stanley was about 2 weeks old or so, we stopped swaddling him.  Not because we were against it or thought it was difficult, but because he became a little Houdini and was able to get out of EVERY swaddle that we tried.  He would wriggle around and move his hands up, millimeter by millimeter, until one of them was free.  Once one hand got out, he would then start slapping himself in the face with the newly liberated hand and promptly start screaming because he didn't know what was going on.  He got out of all the blankets, the "swaddle-me" (like a mini-straight-jacket with velcro) and the "swaddle-pod" (similar to a VERY tight fitting small sleeping bag).  The only thing we were able to keep him in was a blanket swaddle that we then stuck into the swaddle-pod, but we weren't sure he was breathing completely it was so tight.  In the end we just gave up.

Fast forward to a week or two ago, and one of our friends recommended we try swaddling him again to put him to sleep.  They said that sometimes things that haven't worked for a while will all of a sudden work again.  So, we tried it again and it seems to be working.  We swaddle him up and put him in the swing (which we had also abandoned for a bit and were about to move to the garage) for a little while and usually he will drift off to sleep.  I'm sure this will stop working soon enough, though, and we will have to move on to something else again.  But, for the moment it is working pretty well.
